If there were a pub Olympics, The Washington would breeze to gold. If there was a Miss World contest, The Washington would be balling it's eyes out pledging to do its bit for world peace. This pub is, quite simply, all you ever want in a watering hole and more.   Reviewed: viewlondon.co.uk

The Washington has been described as a beautifully ornate Victorian public house with some splendid sympathetically modernistic touches. Once inside, the pub screams comfort. dark wood complements comfy sofas while a long, curvaceous bar hugs the middle of the room. a piano stands proudly waiting for anyone brave enough to start a singalong. If you spend some time looking around you will see ornate mirrors around the fire place that have been there for many years, if you enter the bar from Belsize park gardens there are mosaic tiles on the floor and a tiled picture on the wall which have stood the test of time.

Built in 1865 by a builder named Daniel Tidey who happens to be the great, great, great grandfather of the present manager Terry. The Washington was named after a town in Sussex just outside of Worthing where Daniel Tidey was born.

The Washington was originally a hotel which was used by cattle traders bringing their cattle to the London markets.

The pub sits a just a brisk five-minute walk from both Belsize Park and Chalk Farm tube stations. It is conveniently situated close to Primrose Hill, Regents Park, Hampstead Heath and Camden Lock with its market.

The video for The Beautiful South record Old Red Eyes is back was made in the Washington in the early 90’s..
